Paul Conrad
Back in 88, he came from the womb.
Singer, Songwriter, Sculptor, Painter and Producer, Paul Conrad is a jack of all trades, though it began with music.
Growing up with rigorous musical training, Paul Conrad’s first explorations as a musician were in an orchestra as a classical bassoonist, clarinettist and pianist. After years of studying, a rebellion against the dry and technical saw him pick up the guitar instead. Conrad began to experiment and channel a darker attitude, performing in mutant hybrids of punk and rock bands around his hometown of Sydney. It is here that he toured and shared the stage with Faker, The Preatures, Gang of Youths, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Oceanics, The Beards, Drunk Mums, The Cairos, The Owls, Gay Paris and The Rubens amongst many more.
At a young age Conrad was engaged by Shock Publishing as a published songwriter. Conrad has produced, written for and worked alongside and with: Georgia Fair, Lisa Mitchell, Tim Carr, Wayne Connolly, Woody Annison, James Crooks, Twin Haus, Vera Blue, Shannon Noll, Paige IV, Mind Over Matter, King Veeno, Flo Chase, to name a few.
At age 25, Conrad was signed by Universal Music, Island Records UK and Dew Process on an international music deal for his music released under Paul Conrad. Ditching all forms of tradition (in usual Conrad style), Conrad departed the label shortly after to start his own label Reel Deep Records with fellow multi platinum producer Tim Carr AKA Goldbatman. Conrad released his debut independent EP ‘Roots’ in 2016 and debut LP ‘LXXXVIII’ in 2017. Alongside this, Conrad also released an album titled ‘Rap Clothes’ for side project Yung Tsar the same year. Conrad continues to release his music under this label and to date his music has received over 2 million plays on Spotify. New solo music on the way with a trilogy album project entitled Hotel 27 for release in 2020.
With a genre-defying blend of analogue instruments and electronic production techniques, Conrad has struck on a sound that emphasises his own unique vision – Nocturnes for the Internet age. Drawing on each of the worlds in his diverse background, Conrad even reclaims conventional orchestral instruments and adapts them to be used in digital ways. Paul Conrad makes music for your last night on earth. Be it a plague of empty pop-songs or a storm of dark Soundcloud links, his music sets up a sound system in the empty husk of the Vatican, speakers across an exiled and toxic Hollywood, with songs equally suited to sinister dance floors and lonely Saturday nights at home.
Vocally, Conrad’s baritone that plays over deft storytelling and lyricism is a skill no amount of training can teach. He records his lyrics like a notepad; a sense of cathartic wordplay that reflects an expressive and bold worldview, told with quick-witted repartee and dark humour – the trademark of an artist with plenty to say – and will undoubtedly reveal in moments to come.
Conrad made his foray into fashion collaborating with brands Black Math, Wrangler & General Pants as the face of their campaigns in 2015. Conrad has also produced music for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, fashion houses; Alberta Ferretti, Cynthia Rowley and more.
In 2019, Conrad added to his creative repertoire, tapping into his artistic side, building on his musical capabilities. His Buzz Lightyear pencil sketches from 10 years old evolved into high quality, and unique art. Conrad’s visual art expeditions include creating 3-dimensional sculptural art typically using air-dry clay with painted finish. He handcrafts the sculpture bases out of found materials alongside painting scenes of intergalactic fused with still life and portraiture. Among all his art there is a common thread, typically, Conrad’s art personifies in art form an iconic and notable person in history, whether they be known for being good, or bad, is irrelevant, but always with a “twist”. Conrad is also a lawyer in NSW, Australia and has an interest in the intersection between law and art.
